(ANSA) - ROME, FEBRUARY 24 - About 36% of Italian families, while shopping, invest time to check the labeling of food products to verify the ingredients, lower than the French and Spanish who turn out to be the most virtuous consumers respectively with 42% and 44%.
This is what emerges with NielsenIQ's "Conscious Eater" research.
The market study analyzed food habits in five European countries and how they affect consumer buying behavior.
More than 37,000 families involved in the survey are involved in Italy, Great Britain, Spain, Germany and France.
Among the five European countries, Italy ranks first in terms of the importance of food: 92% of the families involved in the survey affirm that the topic is fundamental in their daily life.
They follow the families of Spain with 87% and of France with 79% interest.
Specifically, one in two Italian, Spanish and French families prefers national dishes while families in Great Britain and Germany are open to cuisine influenced by flavors from other countries.
Italian consumers declare less sensitive to issues related to sustainability and close the European ranking: in fact, only 11% of Italian families declare that they eat according to a food regimen determiner since it is more sustainable and therefore with less impact on the environment.

Italy is preceded by Spain with 14% and Great Britain with 17%.
The countries most attentive to these issues, according to NielsenIQ, are France and Germany which respectively register 20% and 30% interest in sustainable eating.
In Italy, 31% of families try to limit their consumption of meat and about 2% say they follow a strictly vegetarian diet.
