A missed opportunity for ARD – and the prospect of a Grimme Prize for RTL on surprising terrain?

The Grimme Institute has nominated the RTL weather department for a special award in the “Information & Culture” category: the private broadcaster stepped into the breach with the conception of a two-minute program called “Climate Update” after ARD had rejected the suggestion “Climate before eight « broadcast before the »Tagesschau« had rejected.

New show formats, modern children's and youth television and haunting documentaries about the corona pandemic: from more than 760 submissions, the Grimme Institute has nominated 74 productions and individual achievements for this year's Grimme Awards.

The winners will be published on May 31st, and the prizes will be awarded on August 26th in the theater of the city of Marl, as the institute announced on Thursday.

(Here is the complete list)

Among the nominees in the category "Entertainment" are show formats with "Who is stealing the show?" (ProSieben) based on an idea by Joko Winterscheidt, "LOL: Last One Laughing" (Amazon Prime Video) and "MaiThink X - The Show". (ZDF/ZDFneo).

But comedy series are also in the running, such as the series “Die Discounter” co-produced by Christian Ulmen or the ZDF Neo eight-part series “Deadlines”, for which SPIEGEL editor Nora Gantenbrink wrote the book together with Johannes Boss.

For the young target group, productions such as "ECHT" (ZDF), "The Question" (BR/funk) or "Am Limit?!

Now WE are talking!« (HR) raises issues of mental health, diversity and inclusion with great sensitivity and matter-of-factness, praised the »Children and Youth« commission.

»Diversity of Life Plans and Life Realities«

The 2021 television year was of course shaped by the corona crisis, said the director of the Grimme Institute, Frauke Gerlach.

For example, the series "Charité intensive: Station 43" (rbb) and the seven-hour TV special "Joko and Klaas LIVE: Pflege ist #NachNachglich" (ProSieben) were nominated.

"In this competition year we were able to see more series and films that take up the diversity of life plans and life realities and enable a change of perspective," said Gerlach.

Productions were nominated that convincingly told stories from the point of view of queer characters - for example the series "All you need" (ARD Degeto) and "WIR" (ZDF/ZDFneo), the reality show "Princess Charming" (RTL + / Vox) or the documentary »Shore Women – Lesbian Life in the GDR« (ZDF).

The commission nominated the journalist Katrin Eigendorf (ZDF) for her special journalistic achievement in reporting on Afghanistan.

Also on the list are the meteorologist Özden Terli (ZDF) for his contributions on the subject of flooding and climate and the editors of »Monitor« (WDR) for a contribution on pushing back refugees on the Croatian-Bosnian border.

The Grimme Prize, which is not endowed, honors television programs and services that have been rated as exemplary and exemplary.

It is considered one of the most important prizes for quality television in Germany.

The prize is sponsored by the German Adult Education Association.

The award has been presented annually since 1964.
