Ukrainians are waking up to war, and are trapped in their country.
Many amateur videos are popping up on the networks and testifying to the evolution of the situation: monster traffic jams on the roads, endless queues in front of food stores or banks, panicked residents trying to evacuate with their meager luggage, or just to take shelter in a metro station.
"The metro saves us, because it is underground," explains a Ukrainian woman.
We just want to save our lives."
Ukraine announced that at least 40 soldiers and a dozen civilians were killed in the first hours of the offensive.

Others have chosen to try to find their family, even if it is further east than them.
A young man from Kiev explains that he wants to go to Cherkassy, a town a little closer to the Russian border, “to join my family, to be together in these unsafe times for Ukraine.
But, I am sure, we will be victorious”.
An opinion which seems to be shared by the Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelensky.
