Do coffee drinkers have an increased risk of later developing glaucoma, also known as glaucoma?

A study found a connection.

Glaucoma* is the most common cause of blindness in industrialized countries.

A study from 2021 examined how high coffee consumption affects intraocular pressure.

This is a major risk factor for the development of glaucoma.

The researchers found that

people with a genetic predisposition should refrain from consuming caffeine

.

Three cups a day would therefore quadruple the risk of increased intraocular pressure.

Glaucoma: So much coffee can increase the risk of glaucoma in those with previous exposure

The study was conducted by researchers at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York.

They examined the data of more than 120,000 participants between 39 and 73 years from the years 2006 to 2010. In addition, the participants repeatedly answered questionnaires about their caffeine consumption, diet, their vision and glaucoma in the family.

Three years after the start of the study, they underwent a check of their intraocular pressure.

The researchers found that in

people with the strongest genetic predisposition

, higher caffeine consumption led to higher intraocular pressure and thus a higher risk of developing glaucoma.

Those who

consumed more than 321 milligrams of caffeine per day

-

around three cups of coffee

- were even four times more likely to have it.

Link between caffeine consumption and glaucoma risk – not all affected

"Glaucoma patients often ask whether lifestyle changes can protect their vision, but this has been a relatively understudied area," said co-author Anthony Khawaja.

"This study suggests that

people with the highest genetic risk for glaucoma may benefit from moderate caffeine consumption

." It should be noted, however, that the association between caffeine and glaucoma risk is only strong in high caffeine consumption and in people with a very high caffeine intake high genetic predisposition was found, according to the expert.

No connection could be established in participants with no or little genetic predisposition.
