Three young men were stabbed by an unknown perpetrator on Carnival Sunday in Düsseldorf's old town.
A 17-year-old victim was still in mortal danger on Monday, a police spokeswoman said.
A homicide detective is investigating.
Accordingly, there was an argument between two previously unknown men and a group of people on Sunday at Burgplatz am Rhein.
One of the two men stabbed a 17-year-old, an 18-year-old and a 22-year-old.
Then the main suspect and his companion fled.
All three victims underwent emergency surgery, and the 18-year-old was also initially in mortal danger.
According to investigators, the suspects, who were not dressed up for the carnival, were caught on a police surveillance camera.
alcohol and aggression
In the run-up to the act on Sunday afternoon, the police had described the situation in the old town as critical.
With the alcohol level, the aggressiveness among the visitors increased on Friday and Saturday.
On Saturday evening, the outside staircase, on which many young people traditionally meet, was cleared because of too high a density of people.
More than 200 people were sent off and 26 people were taken into custody.
The hundreds of police were supported by water police boats and fire brigade forces.
