Researchers from the Taizhou People's Hospital in China have analyzed the results of 25 studies that looked at the influence of probiotics on weight loss.
Their study was published in 2016 in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition.
Probiotics are strains of bifidobacteria or other lactic acid bacteria that are said to have positive effects on health.
In foods such as yoghurt, such bacteria are added to lactobacilli, for which two aspects apply, explains the German Society for Nutrition.
On the one hand, a health effect must be proven, on the other hand, they must be detectable in an active form in the large intestine.

However, foods containing probiotics are not safe for everyone.
Risk groups, such as people with diseases in the gastrointestinal tract, should have the intake medically clarified, advises the consumer advice center.
According to the Central Office, the following products contain probiotics:
yogurt
kefir
Ayran
lassi
sour milk
Lactic acid fermented beans
sauerkraut
Probiotics are said to help you lose weight: study provides background
More than 1,900 subjects took part in the different studies that the researchers compared with each other.
They concluded: Taking probiotics reduces body mass index (BMI) and weight.
Overweight people benefited the most.
Since the studies examined different lengths of time, it is difficult for the researchers to draw a general conclusion about weight loss through probiotics, such as those found in yoghurt.
Overall, the weight can be reduced by 0.6 kilograms, with the decrease being significantly higher if the probiotic diet lasts longer than eight weeks, according to the scientists.

In addition, consuming different types of probiotics helped participants lose weight.
Even if people lose a little weight from such diets, it can still have very positive health consequences.
This alone can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
