As early as 2020, researchers came to the conclusion that people with blood group 0 are less likely to become infected with corona.

A new study reveals the possible cause.

Some people literally attract diseases.

Still others cannot remember when they last had to recover.

Researchers around the world are working on the question of how cold, autoimmune and even cancer diseases develop and who is particularly susceptible.

The coronavirus has been the focus of research for around two years.

As early as 2020, Austrian scientists established a connection between blood group and susceptibility to infection.

Eva Maria Matzhold and Thomas Wagner from the University Clinic for Blood Group Serology and Transfusion Medicine at the Medical University of Graz (Med Uni Graz) concluded from their large-scale study:

People with blood group zero should contract the Sars-CoV-2 coronavirus less often than people with the blood groups A, B or AB*

.

For their study, the Graz scientists evaluated data from 399 Covid 19 patients who had to be hospitalized because of the disease.

"Our study results show that people with blood group O have a statistically significantly lower probability of contracting Covid-19

than people with blood group A, B or AB," explained Thomas Wagner in a press release from Med Uni Graz: "The Blood group AB, on the other hand, was found significantly more frequently in infected people and people suffering from Covid-19”.

Blood group 0 carriers could “reject corona viruses and thus avoid infection”

Peter JI Ellis, lecturer in molecular genetics and reproduction at the British University of Kent, has devoted himself to research into the causes.

"In Western populations, people of type A and AB are "super recipients", while people of type O are "super disseminators"," Ellis explains in his study published in June 2021 on the specialist portal

ScienceDirect

, the model he uses study is based on.

Several independent data sets would suggest that blood type A is over-represented and blood type O under-represented in Covid-19 patients

, Ellis said.

"However, blood group antigens do not appear to be traditional susceptibility factors," the study continues.

Ellis, on the other hand, sees indications that the reason for the lower susceptibility of blood group O people lies in the compatibility of blood groups.

“Based on information from around the world, our latest data model shows that SARS-CoV-2 infection behaves similarly to a blood transfusion and that infected patients are two to three times more likely to pass the virus on to someone for whom they are infected are a compatible blood donor,” Peter Ellis is quoted as saying on the

medicalxpress

portal .

"This explains why people with blood group O have a lower risk of infection.

Just as they refuse blood transfusions from non-O types, they can shed viral particles from a patient with non-O blood, thereby avoiding infection

' Ellis continues.

However, further studies would have to follow, according to the study: "In view of the good agreement between this model and the observational data on disease prevalence, the underlying biochemistry urgently needs to be investigated experimentally".

The researchers from Graz warned that blood group 0 was by no means a license.

A coronavirus infection* is no easier for people with blood group 0 than for others.

"People with blood group zero still have to protect themselves right away," orf.at

Graz transfusion doctor Wagner as saying.
