Tea is perceived by many as a healthy and even healthy drink - and the rehabilitation of those who do not boil water for tea with the appearance of the first symptom of some disease.

This is not necessarily a mistake, her daughter has quite a few health benefits and powerful and influential herbal compounds.

But there are also less healthy types of tea, and there are, it turns out, also a type that is downright dangerous to the point of tripling your risk of getting certain types of cancer.

This is a tea made from the leaves and branches of a plant called Ilex paraguariensis, but if you know it it is probably called "mata" | (or yerba tea).

This is a traditional tea that is typical of South American countries, and in the past, quite a few health benefits were associated with drinking it, one of which is the strengthening of the immune system.

However, a number of studies conducted in recent years suggest that drinking math frequently increases the risk of cancer significantly.

One of these studies, published in the journal Cancer Epidemiology Biomarker and Prevention, marks this particular tea as a risk factor for lung cancer and gastrointestinal cancers like stomach cancer, esophagus, bowel cancer, pancreatic cancer and liver cancer.

This is due to a carcinogenic substance called PHA (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) found in the plant from which the mat is made.

Other places where this carcinogen can be found are roast meat and tobacco.

"Mata drinking is a very common habit in some South American countries and has been linked to an increased risk of esophageal cancer. This risk may also be related to drinking the drink at a very high temperature or to the carcinogenic substances found in mata infusion," the researchers wrote.

In a further review of the data after the study was published, they concluded that the risk of developing esophageal cancer for those who drink mata is 3 times higher.

Thermal injuries

One study published in 2019 found that people who drink boiling tea are at increased risk for 'thermal injury'.

They further found that people with a lower level of education or a lower socioeconomic rating have an increased tendency to drink tea at high temperatures, and those who tend to drink a lot of tea also tend to drink it at high temperatures (65 degrees Celsius and above).

Pay attention to the ratio of the infusion to the water and also to the temperature at which you drink.

"In the Western world, most tea and hot drinks are consumed at lower temperatures. If you let your tea cool down for a few minutes before drinking, or if you add milk to it - it's enough to cool it down a bit and there is no need to worry," said Nicola Smith. Cancer in the UK.

Along with the 2019 study that dealt with the risk of drinking particularly hot beverages, there are other studies that specifically focused on the risks of drinking mata and yarba, one of which compared drinking this type of tea and smoking 100 cigarettes, in terms of the risk of cancer.

And yet, keep in mind that tea and cigarettes are two products that are consumed in very different forms.

Another influencing factor is the way the tea is made.

In southern Brazil and in places where mata is traditionally consumed it is prepared so that the ratio of water to the infusion mixture is relatively small ,.

In this way, the researchers say, the concentration of carcinogens created in the drink is high, similar to that found in five cigarette boxes.

However, in most other places in the world where this tea is consumed (certainly in Western countries) it is marketed in teas containing a ground mixture of brew in a much smaller quantity.
