Refueling is more expensive than ever in Germany - also due to the conflict in Ukraine.

How and when are petrol and diesel cheapest to get?

An overview.

Hamm - Many drivers in Germany are likely to get in a bad mood even on the way to the gas station.

Because refueling is expensive - really expensive.

A liter of Super E10 currently costs an average of 1.1828 euros;

Diesel 1,756 euros (March 2nd).

And indeed: these are record values.

This was announced by Europe's largest traffic club, the ADAC.

But even now you can still save money when refueling - by choosing the right time, as reported by wa.de *.

Filling up more expensive than ever: when you get the cheapest fuel price

The main reason for the high fuel prices is the increased price of crude oil.

"A barrel of Brent oil currently costs around 86 US dollars on the fuel market," the ADAC announced in February.

Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, prices have continued to rise since then - they are now asking for around 100 US dollars.

Since the end of January 2021, the price of crude oil has increased by more than 60 percent.

In addition, the Fuels and Energy Industry Association, a lobby group for the mineral oil industry in Germany, has calculated that the euro has lost around eight percent of its value against the dollar over this period.

This means that the import of oil becomes even more expensive.

In addition, the CO₂ price that Germany levies on the use of fossil energy in transport and buildings increased on January 1, 2022. The price per tonne of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions rose from 25 euros to 30 euros.

Refueling more expensive than ever: is abroad an alternative?

Many drivers in border regions take the opportunity to refuel abroad.

Diesel and petrol are currently particularly cheap in Poland.

There, on February 1, the VAT rate on fuel was temporarily reduced from 23 percent to eight.

Refueling is also cheaper in other neighboring countries, including Austria, the Czech Republic and Luxembourg.

In the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium and France, fuel prices are similar to those in this country.

“ADAC advises drivers to think carefully about whether it makes sense for them to refuel abroad.

This is certainly the case with immediate border residents.

With a longer journey, you should not only consider the fuel consumption for the additional journey, but also the loss of time,” according to the Automobile Club.

If you want to spend less money on diesel and petrol in Germany, you should pay attention to the time.

In a study, the ADAC claims to have found out that fuel prices rise from 6 a.m. onwards.

The price has therefore reached its peak shortly after seven o'clock.

Refueling more expensive than ever: This is the right time

The right time to fill up according to the ADAC study:

  • between 6 p.m. and 7 p.m

  • between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m

The difference between the most expensive and cheapest time is more than seven cents per liter.

With a tank filling of 50 liters, that's a saving of around four euros.

A few tips when driving can also save more liters of fuel.

Refueling more expensive than ever: do you use an app?

The ADAC advises drivers to use a fuel price app.

This means that not only can the right time slot be selected, but also the cheapest gas station in the vicinity can be found.

There has now been an update for another important app: the Corona-Warn-App.

However, one problem still remains.

Boosted ones are still ignored.

The app indicates with a red message when there is a risk of infection.

The warning remains in the app for that long.
