Have you ever heard of endometriosis?
Read here what the disease is and what the treatment options are.
Endometriosis
is a disease that has received little medical attention for a long time
.
On the one hand, this may be due to the fact that it
is not easy to diagnose
.
On the other hand, it is also due to the fact that it only affects part of the population: it is estimated that up to
15 percent of all women of childbearing age
suffer from endometriosis.
In addition, menstruation is socially taboo in most cultures and is associated with shame.
Many of those affected do not dare to go to the doctor or have already been turned away with the words that it is normal menstrual problems.

What exactly is endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a
chronic condition that causes tissue to proliferate in the abdomen
.
This tissue is
very similar to the lining of the
uterus
(lat.
endometrium ).
The growths can occur in the peritoneum, but also in the bladder or intestines.
Because the menstrual blood cannot drain properly in endometriosis, adhesions develop in the tissue that cause severe pain.
This is how scars form after the period, which keep breaking open and ultimately lead to inflammation.

Endometriosis can be recognized by these symptoms
The
symptoms of endometriosis can
vary
greatly from woman to woman
:
extreme abdominal cramps
nausea
circulatory weakness
rule-dependent pain in the bladder, in the groin or in the shoulder area
severe pain during intercourse
pain when urinating
One of the most devastating side effects of endometriosis is
infertility
.
Up to 40 percent of women who have an unfulfilled desire to have children suffer from endometriosis.
Why do women get endometriosis?
The
causes
of the chronic inflammatory disease endometriosis are still
unclear
.
There are some theories out there, such as that women who get
their
first period very
early
are more at risk of developing endometriosis.
As do women with a
short
cycle
and
long
bleeding time
.
Surgery on the uterus
can cause endometriosis or if a woman
is
late in becoming pregnant
.
To what extent the
genetics
plays a role has not yet been adequately researched.
However, there are families in which endometriosis is more common.

How to diagnose endometriosis
So far, a
laparoscopy
in one of the approximately 50 specialized
endometriosis centers
in Germany has been the only method for diagnosing endometriosis.
For this purpose, incisions are made in the patient's abdomen so that the treating physicians can examine the tissue for endometriosis foci.
These are then removed to stop them from growing and attacking more tissues and organs.
