Istat: unemployment rate drops to 8.8% in January

The unemployment rate in January dropped to 8.8%

with a reduction of 0.2 points on December 2021 and 1.5 points on January 2021. Istat notes this, explaining that the economic data is linked to the rate hike of inactivity (+0.2 points overall, +0.4 points for women) while the employment rate compared to the previous month remained stable at 59.2%.

The unemployed in the month were 2 million 192 thousand with a decrease of 51 thousand units in December and 326 thousand in January 2021. In January, mainly inactive people decreased (-684 thousand) while the employed increased by 729 thousand units.

In January 2022, total employees were 22 million 827 thousand, down by 7 thousand on December 2021 and up by 729 thousand on January 2021. Istat explains that compared to December there are 77 thousand fewer women employed and 69 thousand more men.

The employment rate is stable at 59.2%.

On an annual basis in January there was an increase of 354 thousand women and 375 thousand men. 

The unemployment rate of young people aged between 15 and 24 drops again in January: in the month it stood at 25.3% with a drop of 1.3 points on December and 8 points on January 2021. The employment rate is at 18.9% with an increase of 0.1 points on the month and of 3 points on January 2021. The employment rate grew on a trend basis in all age groups but the highest data was in the 25 group 34 years (+4.5 points).
