A discerning Google Maps user has found the remains of the city of Orr, which was occupied by the desert sands of Iraq, even though it was once home to the bustling home of more than 65,000 people.

According to the Reddit publication, the surfer claims to have located an abandoned city in Google Maps, thousands of years after it became a desert ghost town.

The author of the post, known as u / mystery_unrolles, shared 3 aerial photos of the historic city of Or, which although it began to sink in the sands in 550 BC and after 500 BC was no longer inhabited - can still be seen huge buildings peeking out of the sand.

The user wrote: "The city of Oro / Or was founded in the 20th century BC (about 4,000 years ago). At that time it was the most populous city in the area in Mesopotamia with 65,000 inhabitants."

He later noted in the comments the exact coordinates in which he found the city in Google Maps - 30 ° 57′42 ″ N 46 ° 06′18 ″ E and added: “There are cities older than light, for example Muanjudaru, one of the cultural cities of the Indus Valley, which was founded About 4,500 years ago (probably) ".

According to Britannica, the province in southern Mesopotamia, now southern Iraq, was formerly located on what was the Euphrates River and is one of the oldest cities in the region.

Settlers came to the area in the fourth millennium BC and before its sunset it served as a major city in the area, but today only the ruins and remains of the Ziggurat remain, an ancient and tall structure that was used as a worship of the moon god Nana in Sumerian mythology.

This is how the remains of the city look up close:

Was our father Abraham born here?

Some biblical scholars believe that the city of light is in fact "light as demons", the birthplace of our ancestor Abraham and therefore in fact also the birthplace of the entire Jewish people, from which Abraham and his family went to Haran.

Maharan was sent by God to the land of Canaan.

Archaeologist Sir Leonard Wally, who conducted excavations at the site of the Sumerian city of Or Ha'ir as early as 1927 that it may be biblical light as demons.

Or was an important city in Shomer and later in Akkad and its ruins are in Tel al-Makir.

Originally there was light on the banks of an artificial canal connected to the Euphrates River but due to the changes in the river channel, it now flows about 20 kilometers away.

"Light" is a "city" in the Sumerian language, and according to Sumerian tradition was founded even before the flood, which also appears in the ancient Sumerian writings.

According to this interpretation, the word "Kashdim" was added to the city name because they later settled there or it was founded by the son of Or Ben Kashed, probably a descendant of Arpachshad, the third son of the name of Ben Noah.

In contrast, some scholars identify Or as demons in other places such as the city of Urfa in present-day southern Turkey, or the city of Orakesh in northern Syria, which lies northeast of the city of Harran.

At the same time, Torah commentators disagree as to whether Abraham was indeed born in the light of demons like his father or was born at all after his father had already moved to Haran.

Now that the city is deserted and engulfed in the desert sands, it is a fascinating site for professional and amateur archaeologists.

Reddit surfers expressed their enthusiasm for the discovery: "I would love to visit there at some point to see these buildings and see why the Bible mentions light so many times," one reporter added: "I read somewhere that light is a very likely candidate to meet the city's definition. The first human. "A third person added:" This is the city from which Abraham came.

This is mentioned many times in the Torah.

"It is likely that Abraham lived in the glory days of this city."

Some of the structures at the site were previously uncovered in excavations at a place where they were covered with sand, and it is not known whether this was done intentionally or by the forces of nature.

The large ziggurat is still completely exposed and is the only preserved structure on the site.

Surprisingly, despite the political situation in Iraq, the site is accessible to tourism, but is mainly aimed at domestic tourism.

Since the Iraq war that broke out in 2003, Western tourist visitors have come to the site again, but most of them were members of coalition forces, coming from a Western military base near the site.
