Anyone who has their own car in Germany must also ensure that it is safe.

That is why the TÜV test is due every two years.

Do all the lights and brakes work, are the tires and engine OK?

In Germany, all motor vehicles must undergo regular inspections.

Trucks, passenger cars, motorcycles and trailers are therefore inspected at certain intervals by the TÜV as part of the main inspection.

As

echo24.de

* reports, all drivers should therefore know how to read the TÜV sticker correctly *.

Because with the turn of the year to 2022 there were also rule changes and innovations for drivers*.

Every driver should know this.

In addition to the extended equipment of the first aid kit* and the change in the law, after which some driving licenses gradually lose their validity*, the color of the valid TÜV stickers has also changed.

Check TÜV sticker: These colors are valid in 2022

The color of the TÜV badge always indicates the year in which the vehicle's TÜV will expire.

In 2021 that was still the color yellow.

So if you still have a yellow sticker on the rear license plate of your own vehicle, you should urgently go to the general inspection.

Red/brown and pink are currently valid.

They indicate that the MOT will expire in 2022 or 2023.

But what actually happens when the TÜV is exceeded?

Basically, the HU must not be exceeded.

TÜV-Nord

explains this

on its website.

Accordingly, the vehicle owner is responsible for adhering to the specified deadlines.

However, anyone who drives around with an exaggerated TÜV must expect penalties.

These are getting juicier the longer the HU would be due.

  • TÜV expired for more than 2 months: 25 euros

  • MOT expired more than 4 months ago: 60 euros and 1 point

  • MOT expired more than 8 months ago: 75 euros and 1 point

In principle, the main inspection for every car must be renewed after 24 months at the latest; a special regulation only applies to new cars.

These must be checked for the first time after 36 months.

According to bussgeldkatalog.org, motorcycles and trucks up to 3.5 tons have to be inspected by the TÜV every 24 months, just like cars.

Check TÜV sticker - missing HU can have severe consequences

In the case of rental cars, taxis and heavy trucks with a permissible total weight, the period of time between two TÜV appointments is further reduced.

These vehicles even have to undergo a general inspection every 12 months to avoid a fine.

Apart from the fact that it is fundamentally important to always drive your own vehicle to the TÜV on time, the lack of a general inspection can also have other consequences than just fines and points in Flensburg.

Among other things, novice drivers risk a so-called “B violation” if they are caught without a valid TÜV sticker.

If they then afford another negligence, the probationary period is extended and they have to take part in an advanced seminar.

Attention motorists: A valid TÜV is particularly important in the event of an accident

Insurance problems can also arise if drivers are involved in an accident with a vehicle without a valid MOT.

As

allianzdirect.de

reports, an insurance company checks in such a case whether the vehicle owner may have acted with gross negligence.

So it may be that an insurance expert comes to the conclusion that a driver is partly to blame for the accident by "driving without a TÜV" - because the vehicle "was not in a technically perfect condition at the time of the accident" due to the lack of inspection.

The consequence would then be, for example, that the driver would have to pay back at least a part of the damage amount of his own damage to the insurer due to negligence.

TÜV sticker has expired – there are also threats of tougher penalties

If a car is driven for a long time with an expired TÜV, the police can, in the worst case, even have the vehicle shut down.

According to Allianz, this measure should prevent other road users from being endangered.

So it's always worth knowing all the current rules in road traffic - even the regulations that not everyone knows* - not just because, in case of doubt, your own life can depend on a TÜV-tested car.

Because even those who, for example, cannot interpret new street signs*, or do not know how to behave correctly at a yellow traffic light*, must expect hefty penalties in case of doubt.
