Recall of wheat product - carcinogenic and mutagenic substances

Freekeh is a grain product made from unripe durum wheat that has been harvested and dried and roasted over an open fire.
A manufacturer found carcinogenic substances in some packages and is recalling the relevant batches.

For many it is considered a superfood and is one of the very fiber-rich foods.
However, only increased PAH values were discovered in some batches from a manufacturer.
Munich - The Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety and the manufacturer are recalling the wheat product "Freekeh".
The reason: increased levels of PAHs (polyaromatic hydrocarbons) were measured in the roasted green wheat product.
Some of them are considered mutagenic and carcinogenic.
Consumption is therefore not recommended.

As the manufacturer Baladna announced in a notice, increased PAH values were found in the goods.

Unfortunately, we have become aware of individual cases of increased PAH content in the product Baladna roasted green wheat," warns Baladna DE GmbH.
“Some representatives of the PAH have a high probability of being mutagenic and carcinogenic.
The following best- before
dates and batches are affected by the recall:
Batch FA0619-6 with the best before date 06/30/2022,
Batch FA0619-56 with the best before date 19.11.2022,
Batch FA0619-303 with the best before date 03/03/2023,
Batch FA0619-301 with the best before date 03/03/2023.

According to the Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety, the roasted green wheat was mainly traded in the federal states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Berlin, Hesse, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony.
Anyone who has a pack of the batches mentioned can return it or send it directly to Baladna (address: Baladna DE GmbH, Bottroper Str. 480, 45356 Essen).
As a replacement, customers can choose between a new pack or their money back.
