You were probably asked during pregnancy if you were going to use Doula's services during the birth, but did you know that a doula can help you even after the birth?

Naomi Cohen

, a postpartum doula, is happy to explain and open you up to a world you may not have known.

Let's start from the beginning: the word doula comes from the ancient Greek language and its meaning - a woman who helps.

In childbirth, the role of the accompanying doula is to support and help the mother go through the birth in the best possible way while physically assisting in promoting the birth, maintaining the intimacy between the two spouses and mediating between them and the medical staff.

But what is the role of a postpartum doula?

Or in her professional name - post-partum doula?

The postpartum period, and especially a first birth, can be exciting and empowering, but no less challenging, when you have not yet recovered from the birth and are experiencing a huge emotional load and unbalanced hormones.

The feelings that may arise in new mothers are stress, anxiety and other uneasy emotions some of which fall under the definition of “baby blues” and some of which develop into postpartum depression to varying degrees.

In traditional society, in contrast to modern Western culture, mothers would enjoy the support of the "female tribe" that envelops it until it recovers from childbirth.

The women who surrounded the midwife took care of feeding her, massaging her and even performing traditional ceremonies that help her recover.

At the same time, the grandmothers, sisters and all the relatives helped her take care of the baby and actually educated her in her new role.

Need quite a bit of support during this time.

Today, help is more limited, although there is significant mobilization among the maternity family, and this is exactly where a postpartum doula comes into play.

Its role is to create a shell of support for the mother and her family according to everyone's needs.

It is desirable that the meeting with the doula takes place even before the birth in a kind of preparatory meeting, in which communication about the fetus and its preparation for the birth is worked on.

At this point the parents receive tools and information about caring for the baby in the first few days with an emphasis on the first night at home.

After the birth there are a variety of ways in which the mother can be supported.

There are those who ask that the doula accompany them at night while still in the hospital, help establish breastfeeding or with relevant guidance, feed from a bottle or anything else of their choice.

Other mothers order a doula after returning home, so that it will help them adjust to the new parenting, guide them as needed and teach them basic baby care like first bath and more.

In addition, an equally important role of the postpartum doula is listening - to be a listening ear to the mother, to normalize the vortex she feels and to process with her an initial birth experience that will allow her to ventilate her feelings a bit and give them expression.

As the days go by, a postpartum doula can continue to accompany the mother in meetings and online accompaniment according to the needs of the mother.

It is important to know that a postpartum doula usually brings with it additional tools such as baby massage instruction that can also focus on dealing with flatulence, breastfeeding instruction, tools in natural medicine, or tools in the emotional realm, such as BOT that handles coping around the birth field.

The Jama app was established with the aim of addressing mothers of babies from birth to age three, and centralizing for them content, activities, tips from experts and videos that will accompany them throughout this challenging period.

All the content in the app "grows" with the baby and is precisely adapted to its developmental stages, so that the mothers receive only what is relevant to them and interests them at any given moment.

The Jama app is the place for mothers in Israel to meet and get to know other mothers around them, and create new and exciting friendships in the fascinating journey.
