Women's Day has arrived, and with it lots of articles about women who have made it big, messages that are supposed to be empowering and lots of commercials for things we do not need.

Since we in the section have room for researchers, scientists, doctors and medical staff all year round, we decided this year to give up an article that treats successful women as a rare interest (because it is not), and talk about a topic that women really need to know.

There are quite a few common medical conditions that affect women differently, and more often,.

In fact, female hormones can make you more vulnerable to various diseases, especially those that originate in the body's immune system.

Three doctors (did you see what we did here?) Tell of three diseases that affect women more.

arthritis

"Inflammatory joint diseases exist in all age groups," explains Prof. Merav Lider, director of the rheumatology unit at Sheba Medical Center, "and for each age group, its characteristic arthritis."

Prof. Lider added that arthritis is characterized by pain that intensifies at rest.

"Many patients wake up from sleep with stiff palms that are sometimes accompanied by a temporary decrease in sensation, while activity usually relieves or relaxes the joint," she explained. "Total of the joints, tendons and soft tissue in the fingers or toes, a condition that causes swelling with the appearance of a 'sausage' accompanied by intense pain."

Why do women react to it differently?

Women tend to suffer more from a "peripheral" disease that involves many joints symmetrically in the hands and feet, while men are more likely to suffer from a disease that involves the spine or individual peripheral joints.

In addition, women with psoriatic arthritis (concomitant arthritis for people with skin psoriasis) suffer more from fatigue and anxiety, respond less well to the various treatments and suffer from a more significant decrease in their quality of life compared to men.

Activity actually relieves the pain.

"Our immune system is affected by every change that happens in our body, and one of the changes to which the immune system is most sensitive is the change in the ratio between estrogen (the female hormone) and testosterone (the male hormone)," Prof. Lider explained. "Hormonal changes throughout their lives, while men go through much less dramatic changes, and therefore hypersensitivity."

How is it treated?

The treatments available today for arthritis are many and show good effectiveness.

There are drugs given in pills whose function is to balance the activity of the immune system, to reduce inflammation slowly over time and effectively.

New biological drugs have recently been added to the treatment arsenal, so there is a very wide range of possible treatments.

Migraines

"We have all felt a headache at some point, but a migraine is a pain of a different nature - and anyone who has experienced a migraine will recognize it," explains Prof. Shlomit Jost, director of the neuro-oncology unit and senior physician at the headache clinic at Beilinson Hospital.

Migraine is actually a disease that manifests itself in an attacking headache, accompanied by nausea and vomiting and sensitivity to light and noise.

"Migraine is a very common disease, and it is three times more common in women than in men," said Prof. Jost. Goat's head, accompanied by sensitivity to light and noise and aggravated by physical exertion. "

Without treatment, a migraine attack can last for hours and even several days.

Why do women react to it differently?

"The mechanism of migraine is still not fully clear to us. Migraine is more common in women, and we believe that the reason lies in the hormonal changes that women go through," explained Prof. Jost. We are seeing an increase in the number of women suffering from migraines, compared to men. Another fact that supports this is that during pregnancy there is relief from migraines, whereas around the menstrual cycle many women feel aggravated. We are led to think that there is some connection to the hormonal situation. "

How is it treated?

Migraine treatments are divided into acute and preventative treatments.

Acute treatment is treatment during the pain itself in order to alleviate the suffering.

The treatment for acute pain is with painkillers that are familiar to us from pain elsewhere such as acetaminophen or a drug from the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug family.

In addition, there are medications designed for migraine pain, such as tryptans.

Preventive treatment is given in order to prevent the onset of seizures or to reduce their frequency and intensity.

This treatment is given regularly and is usually used for women who suffer from significant impairment in quality of life despite optimal acute treatment.

Migraine prevention uses blood pressure lowering drugs (beta blockers), anticonvulsants and antidepressants.

Recently, a new group has entered, biological therapies that contain antibodies to CGRPK, a protein that is a significant tier in migraine headaches.

Multiple Sclerosis

"MS is an autoimmune disease in which our immune system, which is supposed to protect against bacteria and viruses, gets confused and turns against the body itself," explains Dr. Hadar Kolb, an expert in neurology, neuroimmunology and multiple sclerosis. Aviv (Ichilov).

MS affects a fatty substance called myelin and envelops the nerve endings.

The injury can be anywhere in the nervous system, so the symptoms may vary from person to person, and so can the symptoms.

"The statistics are significant in a ratio of 1-3 to the detriment of women."

"The most common symptoms of multiple sclerosis are sensory disturbances, decreased sensation, various tingling, disturbances in vision, gait and stability and general weakness," Dr. Kolb explained.

Why do women react to it differently?

The

cause of sclerosis is unknown, a number of risk factors have been found for multiple sclerosis or disease progression, including smoking, vitamin D deficiency, obesity and hormonal changes. "We do not have an unequivocal answer to why women are more vulnerable than men. "But the statistics are significant in a ratio of 1-3 to the detriment of women, similar to other autoimmune diseases," said Dr. Kolb.

Also in this case, among children with the disease the difference in the incidence of the disease is not found between the sexes, so it is likely that there is a hormonal relationship based on the change in the level of sex hormones that makes women more susceptible to multiple sclerosis.

"It can also be seen that from the second trimester of pregnancy there is a decrease in the frequency of seizures, while after pregnancy the chance of the disease increases, but of course it also depends on the degree of disease activity and the frequency of pre-pregnancy seizures," added Dr.

Kolb

.

Emphasizes the importance of the therapeutic window of opportunity at the onset of the disease, a stage in which there is significant inflammatory activity, but cognitive and physical function is relatively preserved. Dr. Kolb.

She explained that studies from recent years have shown that effective and early treatment of the inflammatory stage at the beginning of the disease can lead to the control of seizures in the short term and also lower the chance of the disease progressing later.

"Today there are a variety of treatments that work through different mechanisms. It is customary to divide the drugs into groups according to their effectiveness in reducing the frequency of clinical and imaging seizures and depending on how they are taken - self-injections, pills, or intravenous infusions," she explained. Or change the abnormal immune response that harms the body. "
