More than 20 percent less salary for women: In some industries, the so-called gender pay gap is particularly pronounced - you can read about the top 5 here.

In Germany, the topic of salary is not one of the common small talk topics.

It's different in countries like the USA or Vietnam: Here people talk about income, just like here about the weather.

It is considered a harmless topic of conversation there, even among colleagues.

This has many positive effects

: In salary negotiations, you have a good sense of what increase is realistic.

In addition, with the knowledge of the salary of others who do the same job as oneself, inequality and injustice can also be made public.

Even in Germany there are many sectors in which women and men are not paid equally well.

The reasons for this vary.

Possible causes are the lack of possibility of major salary increases in many typical "women's jobs", problems when returning to work (e.g. after a baby break), but also outdated role models, which still deny women leadership qualities in many places.

Balancing family and career is also difficult in many companies

.

One consequence of this: in many sectors, management positions are given preference to men.

The Gender Pay Gap: On average, women earn 18 percent less per hour than men

The gender pay gap is the difference between the average gross hourly wages (without special payments) of women and men in relation to the gross hourly wages of men.

As the Federal Statistical Office further informs,

in 2020 women earned an average of 18 percent less per hour than men.

Inequality is particularly pronounced in some sectors.
