Health Minister Karl Lauterbach is concerned about the increasing number of corona infections.

He fears a summer wave in Germany.

Berlin – The world has been fighting the corona virus for two years.

The handling of the virus in Germany was usually better, especially in the warmer months.

Because weather can affect the survival time of viruses in a place, as several studies have shown.

Factors such as temperature, UV radiation and humidity play an important role.

Our behavior in spring and summer also contributes to fewer people becoming infected.

However, it is questionable whether it will be similar this year.

It's possible that the latest omicron subvariant BA.2 is thwarting us, as it is even more transmissible than its coronavirus* predecessors, such as the alpha variant.

The increase in the seven-day incidence within the last few days in Germany could also be attributed to the omicron variant, which is now presumably predominant.

A reason for concern for Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach (SPD).

He even fears a summer wave in Germany in 2022.

Corona in Germany: seven-day incidence increases again

For the seventh day in a row, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI)* reported an increase in the nationwide seven-day incidence on Wednesday (March 9).

Their value was therefore 1319.0 and thus higher than the day before (1293.6).

The health authorities in Germany reported 215,854 new corona infections to the RKI within one day.

A week ago there were 186,406 infections.

More and more vaccinated people also experience so-called vaccination breakthroughs, often with a severe course.

So the trend is currently going up again with regard to Covid infections.

Corona in summer 2022: Lauterbach expects a wave of infections

Lauterbach was concerned about these numbers, as several media reports.

The SPD politician said clearly to Funke Medien: "We have to reckon with a summer wave." The reason for his concern is the Delta and Omikron variants that are currently in circulation.

They are so infectious that, despite warm temperatures, many contacts and decreasing vaccination protection can lead to higher numbers of infections.

Even if some people do not become infected with Corona despite contact.

He fears that this year, in contrast to 2020 and 2021, there could also be a corona wave in the summer of 2022.

Lauterbach therefore called for the Infection Act to be geared to this.

Corona in 2022: The federal and state governments must discuss restrictions from March 20th

It was only last Friday (March 4th) that the new relaxation of the corona virus came into force.

These mainly concerned visits to restaurants, events and the opening of clubs.

However, they only apply until March 19, as the Infection Protection Act allows the previously applicable corona restrictions until then.

After that it has to be reassessed.

With the incidence rising, the minister advised that countries must have the ability to respond early to new waves.

The federal and state governments already agree that there should be basic protection from March 20th.

However, it is not yet clear what this will look like exactly.

Corona beyond 2022 – forecasts give little hope

Lauterbach advocated that the federal states should be able to “set upper limits for private meetings and public events as well as access rules for restaurants, for example, i.e. 2G or 2G Plus regulations.” However, the restrictions should only be used if it is necessary.

His further prognosis initially promised little hope of completely combating the virus: after the summer wave of 2022 is almost before the autumn wave, which Lauterbach also expects.

Similar to HIV, the corona virus will continue to occupy us: “A decade or more,” said Health Minister Karl Lauterbache.
