The 34-year-old Ligurian n.36 Atp won a comeback by striking 3-6 6-3 6-3 on the 36-year-old Spaniard Pablo Andujar (n.69).
In the second round Fognini will find the 30 year old Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili, n.18 in the ranking and seeding.
The 20-year-old Tuscan no.56 in the world beat the 28-year-old American Marcos Giron (no.55) 6-3 7-5.
Musetti's next opponent will be the other American Reilly Opelka, 17 Atp and deltabellone.
The only blue in the Californian main draw, the 26-year-old from Tuscany 46 WTA overtook the 25-year-old British Katie Boulter, coming from qualifying, 6-3 6-2.
The next obstacle for Paolini will be the 23-year-old Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka, number 3 in the world ranking and second favorite of the tournament.
In the men's draw there are three other Azzurri, who will enter the second round directly as seeded: Matteo Berrettini (# 6), Jannik Sinner (# 10) and Lorenzo Sonego (# 21).
