Police in Pakistan have arrested a man who is said to have shot and killed his seven-day-old daughter multiple times.
The man killed the girl out of disappointment that his firstborn child was not a boy, police said.
The baby, named Jannat, was reportedly killed on Sunday in the city of Mianwali in central Punjab province.
After a search lasting several days and several searches, the father was finally arrested on Wednesday evening.
"Very angry" about the birth of the girl
Police spokesman Zarrar Khan said the man complained for three or four days before the attack that he had wanted a son rather than a daughter.
He was "very angry" about the birth of the girl.
His wife also confirmed this.
In Pakistan, which is strongly patriarchal, many people want sons, and they are also seen as a better guarantee of financial security.
Violence against girls and women remains widespread in the country, according to human rights groups such as Amnesty International.
Perpetrators are rarely held accountable.
About a month ago, the case of a pregnant Pakistani woman attracted attention: A self-proclaimed faith healer had driven a nail into her head with a hammer.
The man had said this ensured that the woman would give birth to a boy.
According to a medical prognosis, the mother of three daughters was expecting another girl.
