War in Ukraine: Europe must "prepare to receive 5 million people", says Borell

“Today we have 25,000 reception places for these people.

For the moment, France is obviously up to the expectations of these people”, specifies Gérald Darmanin, while Europe is unanimously committed to a massive reception of refugees.

An interministerial crisis unit dedicated to welcoming Ukrainians opened on Thursday.

It must specify the distribution of populations and support the local authorities, associations and companies concerned, "in order to make their assistance as effective as possible", in the words of the Minister of the Interior.

Already more than 2 million

Outpouring of "colossal" generosity, accommodation offered by the thousands, express issuance of visas: a week after the arrival in France of the first people fleeing the conflict in Ukraine, the country has organized itself to offer them a tailor-made welcome.

Of the more than two million people who have taken the road of exodus since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, only a handful have arrived in France.

But in a country where the supply of emergency accommodation is saturated and which had not yet finished absorbing the evacuations of Afghans fleeing the Taliban regime, this new crisis could raise fears of delicate care.

During the press briefing, Gérald Darmanin recognized "a small tension in Île-de-France", specifying that his ministry and the authorities are "in the process of solving" the problem.

3,000 people from Ukraine are already being taken care of in emergency accommodation, such as gymnasiums or hotels, mainly in Île-de-France, he explained.

Many accommodation options

While many others were able to be accommodated directly "by relatives", explained the day before Alain Régnier, interministerial delegate for the reception and integration of refugees.

In total, the State received "20,000 accommodation proposals" from individuals, not counting 6,000 other offers from businesses or communities.

A “colossal surge of generosity”, also observed Wednesday the Minister Delegate for Citizenship Marlène Schiappa, with some journalists.

As proof of this, the 320,000 connections on Wednesday morning on the “I am committed to Ukraine” platform, presented on Tuesday.

Leaving Ukraine on Saturday, Ania took refuge in Paris with her mother and her 5-year-old son

The Ukrainians who arrived in France, two-thirds of women and children, benefit from the equally unprecedented system of temporary protection, activated by the European Union for the first time since its creation in 2001. Only a week after the first arrivals , 265 Ukrainian children are already enrolled in French schools, says the same source.

The temporary protection, the Interior Ministry stressed, will also apply to people of other nationalities fleeing Ukraine but who did not have refugee status and who “cannot safely return to their country. , like the Syrians or the Afghans”.
