In stores like Lidl, Aldi and Co., customers can already feel it: a coveted product has become scarce and expensive in a very short time.

Neckarsulm – The Ukraine war also has noticeable consequences for Germany.

The prices for certain products are rising and gas customers have to fear price explosions if supply bottlenecks actually occur.

It becomes very critical when several factors come together and products become scarce and consequently more expensive.

Consumers notice this at the latest when shelves are empty or the price has almost doubled in a very short time.

This is currently the case in several stores - including Kaufland, Lidl and Aldi - where customers stare at the oil shelf.

According to reports in the

“Lebensmittel Zeitung”

, the discounter giant Aldi Süd has even had to intervene and limit sales of its own brand of oil “Bellasan” to four bottles per customer.

But even those who are still standing in front of full shelves will have noticed that sunflower and rapeseed oil have become significantly more expensive.

BW24 reports on this.

Price shock for sunflower and rapeseed oil - customers pay almost twice as much

On Facebook there is already talk of a "price explosion", which is not exaggerated in view of the price increase.

According to

"CHIP"

, the price of sunflower and rapeseed oil has almost doubled in a very short time.

In 2021, some cooking oils were still available for less than one euro – prices of around 1.80 euros per bottle are now the expensive reality.

Experts assume that an end to the price increases is not yet in sight, because the factors causing them to increase are intensifying.

On the one hand, poor harvests are currently causing fewer raw materials, and on the other hand, numerous manufacturers are still struggling with delivery bottlenecks due to the corona pandemic, which could become even more severe in view of the Ukraine war.

The reason: The Eastern European country is one of the most important exporters of sunflower and rapeseed, says Momme Matthiesen, who is the managing director of the Association of the Oilseed Processing Industry (Ovid) in Germany.

Facebook community panics - 'goddamn we need the oil'

Matthiesen does not see the security of supply in Germany in acute danger, but this can still affect the price formation of sunflower or rapeseed oil.

And at the latest when it comes to prices, many Germans react quickly in panic, as the Facebook reactions to the topic of cooking oil show.

"God damn, we need the oil for fries," texts one user.

Another added: "Have to go shopping immediately".

However, many users also criticize the behavior of such users, speaking of “pure scaremongering” and recalling the toilet paper crisis that Germany had to endure during the lockdown.

In contrast to toilet paper, however, cooking oil could be a much bigger problem, because in 2021 two large manufacturers in Europe stopped producing cooking oil, as an industry representative revealed to the

“Lebensmittel Zeitung”

.

Sunflower and rapeseed oil are scarce and expensive - there are many reasons for this

The informant cites the "lower profitability of the industry" and the ongoing "delays in logistics" as the reason for this.

The topic of "cooking oil - scarce and expensive" could keep consumers busy for a long time.

And the important product for crispy fries is by no means the only one currently making the headlines.

A new EU requirement bans popular cosmetic products from dm and Co. that contain a dangerous fragrance.

In addition to delivery bottlenecks and legal requirements, Russia's aggression in the Ukraine is also having an increasing impact on the availability of products in Germany.

A report by RUHR24* shows how extreme.

Because even large corporations such as Lidl, Aldi and Edeka ban Russian products * from their range and want to send a clear signal in the Ukraine war.
