In the spirit of those who welcome Ukrainian refugees in France, there is the desire to offer a roof and the warmth of a home to people who no longer have anything as if they were members of your own family. .
Except that in terms of insurance, these “guests” are not covered in the same way as your son, your daughter, your wife or your husband.
French insurance companies have therefore decided to extend free of charge, on simple request, the civil liability and defense-recourse guarantees of the home insurance contracts concerned.
“In other words, the refugee(s) you welcome into your home will be covered in the same way as a member of your family,” explains France Assureurs, which represents 247 insurance companies in France.
What are these guarantees taken out as part of your home insurance used for?
The private life civil liability guarantee covers in particular the pecuniary consequences of the civil liability incumbent on the insured in the context of his private life due to bodily injury, material and immaterial damage caused to third parties by yourself or persons living within of your home.
“Welcome them in the best possible conditions”
“This covers the reimbursement costs linked to these small incidents of daily life which can occur in your apartment, your house or your garden, explains a spokesperson for France Assureurs: soccer ball pulled by a child in the window of the neighbor with the flowerpot that fell from your balcony onto the car parked just below in the street”.
“Faced with the dramatic situation that Ukrainians are experiencing, insurers have therefore decided to mobilize alongside the French who are showing solidarity by welcoming refugees into their homes,” explains Florence Lustman, President of France Assureurs.
We hope that the insured can welcome them in the best possible conditions”.
Thanks to this provision, insurance professionals believe that "the host and the guest will be protected" from the costs of an accident that could occur within their household, including if it is a water leak or fire.
The extension of these guarantees to Ukrainian refugees is valid until 31 December 2022.
It concerns the civil liability and defense-recourse guarantees of multi-risk housing contracts (MRH) for main or secondary residences in which refugees benefiting from the temporary protection of the European Union are accommodated.
The number of refugees arriving from Ukraine has almost doubled in a few days according to figures released before the weekend by the Minister of the Interior.
7,500 refugees have arrived in France and France expects up to 100,000.
