John Cleese has repeatedly spoken out against the culture of cancellation and political correctness that has been imposed on the world in recent years, and now it seems that he too is on the way to cancellation - or at least a candidate to be.
This is after during a panel at the SXSW Festival in Austin, Texas, his microphone was taken from him after he told a pointless joke about slavery.
According to reports, the audience present at the venue "was not sure how to digest" the humor of the British comedian.
The veteran actor participated last Friday in a panel called "John Cleese in Conversation," alongside other familiar names from the world of comedy.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the evening began with the black comedian Dolce Sloan's reference to colonialism.
When Cleese responded by saying that "the British were not the ones who started taking over territories," Sloan replied, "We know, but you did it so well! That's why I'm here. I'm not supposed to be here!"
Cleese responded to these words with the sentence "We also gave you a free pass."
According to the Reporter, those present in the courtroom responded with a "sigh of shock," and the effect of astonishment continued when Cleese added: "History is a history of crime. It is a history of stronger people beating the weak, and it has always been so. It is very disturbing, but to put up "Face that one group (British. AP) was more horrible than another? Are you aware that the British experienced slavery at two different times in history, yes?".
It is further reported that even when Sloan shifted the discussion to other topics, Cleese soon returned to the explosive topic of conversation.
"People are becoming competitive when it comes to oppression. We, the British, have been oppressed by the Romans for about 400 years."
In response, Ricky Wallace, another panelist, said: "It's starting to feel really uncomfortable. Is this Dave Apple's new special?"
(A sarcastic joke that compared Cleese's remarks to offensive remarks by Apple in his latest Netflix special, which brought him public outrage).
From here Cleese began to appoint more peoples who oppressed his people and added that he demanded from them "compensation."
The straw that broke the camel's back, according to those present at the event, occurred when Cleese was about to tell a joke that began with the sentence "You know why Jews ...", but before he could finish, Sloan snatched the microphone from his hands.
In response to panel moderator Dan Pasternak's remark that Sloan "saved the colonialist," the comedian responded with the sentence: "I saved a comedian whose career I value."
