Empty shelves for toilet paper items could soon become permanent.

The paper industry warns that production must be stopped if no more gas comes from Russia.

Munich - The Ukraine conflict also has a direct impact on consumers in Germany.

Sunflower oil, for example, is becoming scarce because Ukraine is one of the world's most important export countries for this product.

Supermarkets and discounters such as Aldi, Lidl, Rewe and Co. have rationed sales as a precaution - stocks could be used up in just a few weeks.

War in Ukraine: Serious consequences for consumers in Germany

What consumers are also feeling strongly at the moment are the high fuel prices.

If you fill up, you currently have to dig much deeper into your pocket than was the case a month ago.

A liter of petrol or diesel costs well over two euros.

Germany could now face serious consequences from Russia's war against Ukraine.

The chairman of the Federal Association of Freight Transport and Logistics (DGL for short) recently warned of the worst supply crisis in Germany since the end of the Second World War.

Ukraine war: paper industry raises the alarm

Now the paper industry is also sounding the alarm.

In a press release dated March 17, the Association DIE PAPIERINDUSTRIE (formerly the Association of German Paper Mills) states that manufacturers of tissue paper could face an immediate production stop and a supply crisis if gas supplies from Russia were interrupted.

Hygienic papers include toilet paper, kitchen rolls or facial tissues.

When asked by merkur.de

, association spokesman Gregor Andreas Geiger

stated that the companies are already having difficulties producing economically because of the exploding gas and electricity prices.

Some see their existence threatened.

"If no more gas comes from Russia, it will be dramatic," says Geiger.

During the pandemic years, there was only an “apparent shortage” of sanitary paper products.

"Now, however, the entire production is at risk."

War in Ukraine: Sanitary paper manufacturers selectively shut down machines

Various large manufacturers belong to the association, as well as the company WEPA with its headquarters in North Rhine-Westphalia.

WEPA has specialized in the manufacture and sale of sustainable hygiene paper and is the market leader in the manufacture of hygiene paper made from recycled fibres.

The company has over 4000 employees and produces at 13 locations in Europe.
