Honey is often referred to as liquid gold.

And the comparison is quite justified: the most expensive honey in the world comes from Turkey and costs 700 euros per kilo.

Balliköy (Turkey) – The ancient Egyptians referred to honey as “the food of the gods”.

And even today, the superfood of the bees enjoys great popularity.

If you value quality and sustainability, you have to reckon with around 6 euros for a glass of honey.

But it's much more expensive.

Anzerhonig is the most expensive honey in the world and costs up to 700 euros per kilo, as reported by Landtiere.de*.

We reveal what makes him so special.

The most expensive honey in the world comes from Turkey

It is said to have been the favorite honey of the Ottoman sultans and is said to have healing powers.

Anzerhonig comes from a very specific region near the village of Balliköy, which means "honey village", between Turkey's Black Sea coast and the Georgian border.

The treeless plateau "Anzer Yayasli" is at an altitude of 3000 meters and is the origin of liquid gold.

This is how the hype surrounding the bee product honey came about.

The most expensive honey is only produced in very small quantities

Anzer honey is only produced in very small quantities.

One reason for this is that the bees only have a very small time window for foraging in the summer.

Because the winters on the Anzer Yayasli plateau are particularly long and can last until April or May.

Another reason is that feeding sugar is traditionally forbidden among Anzer beekeepers, which is why they always leave enough honey for the bees to overwinter.

In bad years it can even happen that the beekeepers cannot harvest any honey at all and get nothing.

The bee product propolis can even help dogs and cats to relieve discomfort.

The most expensive honey in the world tastes mild and flowery

The vegetation on the Anzer Yayasli Plateau is unique.

Because of the enormous height, almost no other plants grow there, just like on alpine meadows, apart from grass and flowers.

Unlike ordinary honey, the nectar for Anzer honey must come 100 percent from this vegetation - and this is strictly controlled.

This creates a pure multi-flower honey.

Since the flora of the mountain meadows there hardly changes due to the little contact with the outside world, the taste of the Anzer honey almost always remains the same: mild and finely flowery.
