If you cut trees and shrubs in spring, you can soon look forward to beautifully grown and strong plants.

Which shrubs are in March?

By pruning back in March, trees and shrubs in the garden* are in top form.

All perennial plants that build up a woody scaffold are called shrubs - such as trees and shrubs.

In spring,

fruit trees and berry bushes

in particular need pruning in order to bear plenty of fruit later.

In the case of ornamental shrubs, pruning should primarily promote beautiful growth and rich flowering.

We have put together below which plants you should take good care of in March.

Cutting trees in March: which plants need pruning now

  • Roses:

The rule of thumb here is: the stronger the growth of the roses, the weaker the plants are cut back.

The secateurs should always be set

about five millimeters above an eye or a side

    shoot.

To prevent plant diseases, first remove all dead and diseased shoots before you start cutting properly.

    “In the case

of bedding and hybrid tea roses

, four to five strong shoots from the previous year are left standing and shortened to 20 to 40 centimeters – the rest are removed directly at the base.

    In  the case of

    shrub roses

, cut back stronger shoots by a third and weaker shoots by half,” advises the

    My Beautiful Garden portal.

Incidentally, once-blooming roses are only thinned out very lightly, and only if necessary, in the spring.

By the way, this is how you care for roses after they have bloomed*.

  • Fig tree:

If you don't prune fig trees (Ficus carica), you will soon have to deal with a wild thicket in which the fruits hardly thrive.

It is better to use a cut to ensure a loose crown in which the figs can ripen well.

The best time for pruning is in February and March, before they sprout.

First, remove all frozen shoots, as well as branches that grow inwards.

    Then clear something out.

  • Blueberries:

Numerous berry bushes such as currants, gooseberries or blueberries are pruned in spring, between the end of February and the beginning of March.

    The portal

gartenjournal.net advises that the day of the cutting should be frost-free and the sky should be overcast.

    With blueberries

it is enough if you thin out the

    oldest skeletal shoot every spring.

If the fruit quality is no longer sufficient after a few years, simply extend the pruning care.

If you don't already have blueberries in your garden, spring is the ideal time to plant blueberries.

You can find precise instructions on how to properly trim shrubs and trees in the “Plant Pruning” guide (promotional link).

Do not cut hedges in the garden from March

If you want to reach for the hedge trimmer without worrying, be warned: hedges may no longer be cut from March 1st - there is a risk of a hefty fine of up to 100,000 euros.
