In an interview, Professor Salzberger explains what Corona situation we have to prepare for in winter 2022/23.

There is hope above all when two factors come together.

The easing of the corona infection protection measures at the end of March are currently the subject of heated debate.

Many virologists warn of a "hard Corona winter 2022/23" if 2G+ regulations, mask requirements and other corona protection regulations are no longer applicable in summer.

The fear of new corona variants is also currently driving many decision-makers in politics and healthcare

.

In an exclusive interview with the Ippen central editorial office, Professor Bernd Salzberger, Head of Infectious Diseases at the University Hospital in Regensburg, is optimistic about the winter.

He justifies this, among other things, with the slowly spreading herd protection: "There are increasing signs that the combination of infection and vaccination, which many younger people now have,

is a very good bulwark against new infections

", according to the infectious disease specialist.

According to the professor, around 20 percent of citizens will become infected with corona during the current wave of infections.

This figure and the high number of people who have been vaccinated would promote herd immunity and that "maybe a very good protection for the winter," as Salzberger explains.

Corona vaccination not only protects against omicron

Data from South Africa show "that infection with Omikron, above all in addition to vaccination, gives very good immunity against other variants," explains Bernd Salzberger, a specialist in internal medicine and infectiology.

Humans would not only develop a specific omicron immunity after infection and vaccination.

"That will also help us, no matter what comes up," Salzberger said in an interview.

It could actually be that a completely different variant will still appear.

"A child from Delta, a child from Gamma or whatever, which then has different characteristics and will cause us more problems,"

said the Corona expert.
