To the archaeologists who uncovered them - they looked as if they had just been used: five magnificent tombs about 4,000 years old have been uncovered in Egypt.

The Daily Mail reports that the discovery took place earlier this month in Skara, an ancient burial site located about 22 kilometers south of Cairo.

This site served as the burial city of Memphis, the capital of ancient Egypt.

The tombs that have just been discovered are in addition to other tombs that have been discovered in the compound in the past.

Some scholars believe that these tombs were used in the days of the ancient kingdom (the fourth dynasty of Egyptian pharaohs).

This period began from 2700 BC to approximately 2200 BC.

Other tombs that have been discovered belong to what is called the "First Intermediate Period", a period that lasted about 125 years after the collapse of the ancient kingdom.

Tombs of senior officials and regional rulers

A video distributed by Egypt's Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities shows the various revelations, including burial shafts, walls decorated with hieroglyphs, figurines and images of sacred animals and more.

Sources in the ministry noted that the graves that were discovered were probably of senior officials in the kingdom, including regional rulers.

Mustafa Waziri of Egypt's Supreme Antiquities Council said Egyptian archaeologists began digging in the area last September.

"All five of these tombs are painted and well decorated. We believe we can find more tombs in this area," Vaziri said.

The burial site includes many pyramids, including the King Joser Pyramid, also known as the "Pyramid of Stairs".

In the 1970s, the entire complex was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
