(ANSA) - ROME, MARCH 21 - The Ethics and Disciplinary Commission of the International Chess Federation suspended Russian Grand Master Sergey Karjakin for six months after his declarations on the war in Ukraine.

Sergey Karjakin, we read on the Fide website, is found guilty of violation of the Code of Ethics, and is sanctioned with a worldwide ban, starting today, of six months from participating as a player in any Fide classified scacco competition.

"Sergey Karjakin's statements about the ongoing military conflict in Ukraine have led to a considerable number of reactions on social media and elsewhere, largely negative towards the views expressed by Sergey Karjakin," reads the association's decision.

Another Grand Master Sergei Shipov was found not guilty of violating the Code of Ethics.

"Compared to Sergey Karjakin, Sergei Shipov is considerably less well known and therefore has a less powerful platform. The statements made by Sergei Shipov are also slightly different and less provocative than those made by Karjakin."

(HANDLE).
