In spring, spring cleaning is on the terrace.
Many wooden floorboards now need a new coat of paint.
We show you how to do this here.
When the first warm rays of sunshine draw us onto the terrace in spring, fresh air lovers quickly become disillusioned: Many wooden terraces have become unsightly over the winter, be it due to heavy downpours, frost or snow.
But
aggressive UV radiation on hot summer days can also quickly fade wooden floorboards
.
Then a new coat of paint is necessary to be able to really enjoy the summer with a beautifully decorated terrace*.
In the following, we explain how to prepare and paint your wooden terrace for the treatment.
You can also find out whether oil or glaze is the right choice for painting and caring for your wooden decking.

Painting wooden decking: glazing or oiling?
Wooden decking boards are available in numerous types of wood, such as ash, pine, Douglas fir, Siberian larch or oak.
But tropical woods such as bamboo or bangkirai are also available for terrace design.
What they all have in common is that
wooden floorboards require particularly good care
.
After all, this is a natural product that suffers from the weather effects of sun, rain and fluctuating temperatures.
If the decking boards are discolored or faded, the question quickly arises: should I use oil or glaze for a new coat of paint?
In fact, oil is the best choice for wooden decking
.
According to experts, glazes would rub off too quickly when walked on and would then no longer offer any protection.
Special decking oil or oil that corresponds to the type of wood is best suited for oiling.
After application to the decking, the oil forms a protective layer against UV radiation and moisture.
The natural resins contained in the oil harden and also make the wood hard to walk on.
Instructions: How to clean and paint wooden floorboards on the terrace
Before decking boards are painted or oiled, the wood must first be thoroughly cleaned.
If the floorboards have already taken on an unsightly gray color, you can also degrease them.
This brings the original color of the wood back to life.
Here we will show you
how to tackle the “
painting decking ” project step by step:
Sweeping wooden floorboards:
Sweep coarse dirt and loose leaves from the wooden boards with a broom.
You can also check the position of the screws at the same time.
Clean wooden floorboards with water:
Then carefully clean the floorboards with clear water and a scrubbing brush.
Caution: A pressure washer can be too powerful and damage the wood.
Allow to dry thoroughly – preferably 24 hours.
Apply degreader
: If the wood planks have already turned a gray color, apply degreader to the wood.
After approx. 10 minutes exposure time, work the degreyer into the wood with a hard brush or scrubber.
20 minutes later you can hose off the residue of the degreyer.
The surface must then dry again for at least two days.
Painting wooden floorboards:
Paint the wooden floorboards with an oil that matches the type of wood.
Apply this thinly and evenly with a soft flat brush.
Remains are wiped off with a cloth.
After a further 24 hours, the terrace can be entered again.
You should repeat this process
1-2 times a year
: in spring to prepare for the summer heat and in autumn before the cold season.
Proper care extends the life of the wood and at the same time protects it from discoloration and cracks.
In order for the freshly cared for wood to dry out properly, you should
wait until the
weather is fine, with temperatures
around 20 degrees
.
When painting the floorboards, it should be as windless and
cloudy
as possible - the surface would dry too quickly in the sun.
Then nothing stands in the way of a carefree summer on the terrace.
Provided that mosquitoes don't bother you.
However, these can be dispelled with the right home remedies.
