Director Steven Spielberg drew fire on the network this week, after defining the cast of the "Squid Game" series as "unfamiliar people."

During his panel appearance at the PGA Awards, the legendary director spoke about the Korean hit series and how it has changed the entertainment industry.

In addition, Spielberg praised the Netflix network for its decision to cast players who are not so well known in the West.

"The 'Squid Game' came and changed all of the math for all of us," he said, nodding to Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos, who was in the audience, according to a Deadline report. Spielberg's statement was made when the panel discussed On the question of whether it is important to cast a known cast for lead roles in order for a project to be a success.

During it, the veteran filmmaker gave credit to Netflix for opening its doors to unfamiliar actors and allowing them to star in the TV series it produces.

“A long time ago it was the local stars who brought audiences to the cinema,” he said.

"Today, it's interesting that anonymous people star in series and movies."

As befits ardent fans of the hit series, fans of "The Squid Game" did not accept the compliments of the director of "Jurassic Park" as such.

More than 3,500 Twitter accounts shared an article on the IndieWire website about the director's remarks, noting that most of the actors in the series are very well known and have long been around Asia.

In fact, the lead actor in the series, Li Yongja, is considered one of the most lucrative celebrities in South Korea, according to the Esquire, and has starred in a variety of successful and acclaimed feature films.

"It's not that they are unfamiliar, it's you not researching Asian movies and dramas," read one of the response tweets.

"The cast contains actors who have been selling since the '90s. People really think the world revolves around them."

"Anonymous," wrote another knowledgeable fan.

"For people who only watch American entertainment, I guess."

Another response read: "Correction - 'The Squid Game' proves that Hollywood is right behind when it comes to identifying and recognizing the storytelling capabilities of South Korean films and series and the talents that play in them."

Earlier this year, Netflix confirmed that "The Squid Game" would return to the screens and that the second season of the show was already in development.
