DAZN stands for top-class sport in the stream - but now there was a yellow card for many users: The "Tech Unicorn" from Great Britain resets hundreds of thousands of customer accounts in one fell swoop.

Feltham - "A sorrow shared is a sorrow halved, a joy shared is a joy doubled" - we learn this proverb in kindergarten and in fact "cheering to the skies" and "dead to death" are rarely as close together as in sports.

Whether active on the field or relaxing in front of the TV, football and the like are long-running hits on the nation's screens.

Many sports fans are happy to pay for the luxury of always being there live - and use streaming services such as the Eurosport Player, Sky Ticket or DAZN.

The latter provider, also known as "Netflix des Sports", not only shows Bundesliga matches and matches in the UEFA Champions League,

DAZN: Account sharing is common practice - streaming services are not enthusiastic at all

However, staying close to the action all the time has its price.

It was not until February 2022 that DAZN increased the monthly fee for using its streaming service (see video) - customers now have to pay up to EUR 29.99 to enjoy sports.

Since the TV event is already shared emotionally, it makes sense to break down the sum among several users - account sharing is booming worldwide.

A football evening together is fun - nowadays the highlight can also be experienced with separate screens.

Account sharing is the order of the day – but the practice is a thorn in the side of streaming providers.

Of course, the streaming services lose a few subscriptions and thus a lot of money - so it's no wonder that the providers regulate account sharing heavily.

However, users are often allowed to watch the TV offer on several devices - so it will be difficult for the streaming services to understand whether it is about permitted use or account sharing, which is prohibited by the terms and conditions, if an account is logged into multiple locations.

DAZN resets hundreds of thousands of accounts "to protect your account" - customers suspect more

Many customers find it more than obvious that the action against account sharing is the background to the following action by sports streamer DAZN: While series giant Netflix, for example, is trying to determine the unauthorized sharing of customer accounts using a technical trick, DAZN is much more active before: The British company, which with a company valuation of one billion US dollars before the IPO is one of the rare, so-called tech unicorns, has now without further ado reset hundreds of thousands of user accounts worldwide.

Those affected received this message from DAZN via email:

"We recently reminded you of our Terms of Service and the use of your DAZN account.

We have identified usage behavior that may not be consistent with our Terms of Service.

To protect your account, we've temporarily logged you out of all devices and are asking you to reset your password."

Excerpt from the notification email from DAZN to the affected customers

Shortly before, DAZN – which, pronounced “The Zone” in English, is based on the phrase “being in the tunnel” – had already warned users not to share accounts with other people.

The reason for the reminder is to protect users from hackers and the like.

Even then, customers often agreed that this service was actually based on the fact that various accounts at different locations around the world had logged in - and DAZN suspected account sharing.

After this warning shot, DAZN is now getting serious: almost 300,000 users are now being forced to register again – including some who demonstrably did not share their account.

However, very few customers are enthusiastic about the superficial care of the streaming service.

Whether DAZN secured a round win with this yellow card for account sharers or not scored an own goal in the end will be seen when it will soon be said again: "The ball is round and a game lasts 90 minutes." (askl)
