Fall asleep relaxed, wake up refreshed: not a matter of course for many.

Music is often the sleep aid of choice.

But one type of music has the opposite effect.

Do you relax with soft music before going to bed?

In itself not a bad idea to bring the body to rest.

But a certain kind of music promotes the catchy tune - which can follow you far into the night.

Instrumental music in particular can disrupt sleep immensely

, as researchers led by Michael K. Scullin from Baylor University in Texas inform.

In a study, he and his team examined how music affects falling asleep.

In their study, it became clear that those of the 200 respondents who regularly listened to music before going to bed were more likely to report poor sleep.

In addition, this group complained more often about “catchy tunes”.

These were sometimes so pronounced that the subjects even woke up at night with the catchy melody in their ears.

As the researchers informed in the journal Psychological Science, fans of instrumental music were particularly affected: "(We) found

that instrumental music increased the frequency of nocturnal earwigs and worsened the polysomnographically measured sleep quality,

" says the study.

Instrumental music without vocals before bed?

Better not

In addition to the surveys, sleep laboratory tests were also carried out as part of the study.

Three different pieces of music were played to 50 young volunteers before they went to sleep.

These were Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'", Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" and Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off".

Half of the participants heard the pieces with singing, the other half without.

Here, too, the evaluation of the science portal Spektrum showed that around a quarter of the test persons woke up at night with a catchy tune - especially those who heard the songs without singing.

In addition, the participants slept less deeply, it is said.

EEG evaluations also showed that certain areas in the brain were more active than in the non-music listeners, namely those responsible for consolidating sensory perceptions.

The researchers' conclusion: "

Thus, some types of music may disrupt nocturnal sleep

by inducing long-lasting catchy tunes that are sustained by spontaneous memory reactivation processes."
