Recall: Fresh Nuts Recalls Snack - Contains Carcinogenic Mold Toxin
As the portal
produktwarnungen.eu reports
, excessive amounts of ochratoxin A (OTA) were found in the snack sold worldwide.
This is a mold toxin that has been under food law observation for years.
It was not until October 2020 that the EU Commission presented a proposal for new regulations.
The reason was a study by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) from July 2020, the results of which made it seem necessary to correct the limit values of OTA in the food sector.
No wonder: the poison has a carcinogenic effect in animal experiments
and can also cause nephropathy - i.e. diseases of the kidneys -
cause.

And indeed, the mold toxin can cause great damage in the body.
While experiments in mice and rats have shown the toxin to have carcinogenic effects, it can also cause nephropathy, which is kidney disease.
The EFSA study concludes that
genotoxic effects, i.e. reversible or irreversible damage to the genome, are likely to be caused by OTA.
