In 2001, the Michael Peterson case made the rounds of the American media: the successful writer found himself accused of the murder of his wife, after she was found unconscious at the bottom of the stairs of their house.
On Wednesday March 30, the HBO channel unveiled the dark and intriguing trailer for the series
The Staircase
, adapted from the famous news story.
In the foreground, Colin Firth embodies this loving, protective but above all mysterious father.
At his side, Toni Collette interprets his wife, Kathleen.
The cast also consists of Rosemarie DeWitt as Kathleen's sister as well as Sophie Turner, Patrick Schwarzenegger and Dan DeHaan among the couple's children.
On the French side, the public finds Juliette Binoche in the role of Sophie Brunet, editor of the documentary
Suspicions – The Staircase
, by Jean-Xavier de Lestrade, released in 2004 on the case.

"True crime"
Directed by Antonio Campos (
The Devil All the Time
) and Maggie McGowan Cohn (producer of
American Crime Story: Impeachment
), this new series is therefore not the first to tell the story of Michael Peterson, and the long battle ensuing judiciary.
The writer was eventually found guilty of murdering his wife in 2003 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
After years of investigation and media pressure, he was finally released in 2017 for reclassification of the murder as manslaughter.
The miniseries will follow the entire story from its beginnings, from Kathleen's death to the release of Michael Peterson to the trial.
To try, perhaps, to finally discover the truth.
