On the balcony, in the bucket or in the garden: tomatoes immediately provide summer flair.
So that the harvest is plentiful, there are a few things to consider when watering.
Munich – Tomato plants are among the most popular vegetables in this country.
After all, they are easy to care for, robust and can be grown in raised beds, in beds or even in pots.
The red fruit vegetable is therefore the right choice for garden beginners.
After all, you can also expect a bountiful harvest soon, which motivates you to keep going.
But when it comes to watering, tomatoes have high demands.
Water tomatoes properly: not too much and not too close to the plants
This starts with the watering speed and ends with the time of day when tomatoes prefer to be watered.
The plant also reacts sensitively to too much, especially when it is already bearing fruit.
If watered too seldom, the soil dries out.
On warm spring and summer days, particularly large plants need up to two liters of water a day, while young plants need half a liter.

At the same time, you should make sure that you only water the tomatoes slowly.
As a result, the soil of the plants is evenly supplied with water and can soak everything well to a depth of 20 centimeters.
Only when the water has completely drained away can you carefully add more water.
To find out if the veggies need replenishment, simply test by pressing a finger or the handle of a spoon into the soil.

If the soil feels dry to a depth of two centimeters, then the plant is thirsty again.
By the way: if the plant droops its leaves during the day, it doesn't mean that it needs water.
She only does this to protect herself from the sun's rays by reducing the leaf surface.
Water the tomatoes properly: The best time is in the morning
You should only water them if they still look wilted in the evening.
However, it is best to wait until the next morning to do this.
After all, it often gets colder at night and, in combination with the humidity, the wetness can build up and promote diseases.
It is therefore best to water your tomatoes in the early morning and the plants will be well supplied with water throughout the day.
However, be careful not to water directly on the stem of the plant or the leaves, but only the soil a few centimeters around the plant.
This has another benefit: it forces the plant to extend its roots further, which also makes them stronger and more resilient.
The tomato also has certain advantages when it comes to water.
She prefers low-lime rainwater.
This can be collected in a rain barrel in the garden and used for watering.
Otherwise you can finally use tap water at room temperature.
