A manufacturer is recalling three batches of its rolls.

The reason is that a dangerous toxin has been detected in it.

The product is sold at Aldi.

Kassel – Experts have detected ethylene oxide in a product during tests.

As this gas is harmful to health and does not meet the manufacturer's food safety standards, the product is subject to a current recall*.

According to its own information, the manufacturer Kunua!

Handelsgesellschaft mbH & Co. KG immediately after discovering the gas and had the rolls, which are offered at Aldi*, withdrawn from sale.

Consumers who bought rolls affected by the recall can of course return them to the branch.

The sales price will be refunded even if the receipt is not presented.

The affected protein toast rolls are sold in Aldi Süd* branches in parts of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse.

The batches with the best before dates April 10, 2022, April 13, 2022 and April 27, 2022 are affected.

Dangerous toxin in Aldi product: bread rolls in recall

Ethylene oxide (sum of 2-chloroethanol and ethylene oxide expressed as ethylene oxide) is a gas commonly used as a crop protection agent.

The gas can kill bacteria, such as intestinal bacteria or salmonella, as well as fungi.

The agent is not approved at EU level, the manufacturer writes in its recall.

That is why it must not be present in products from supermarkets such as Aldi, Lidl*, Rewe* and Co.

However, it is used in countries like India for the cultivation of spices, nuts and oilseeds, writes the Lower Saxony consumer advice center.

In the EU, there is only a maximum residue level for sesame.

All other products do not have this.

The dangerous thing about ethylene oxide is that it is mutagenic and carcinogenic.

There is therefore no guideline value without a health risk.

Because of these health risks, eating Aldi's protein rolls is strongly discouraged.

Even the slightest traces in the product could cause damage.

All other Kunua products can be consumed without hesitation.

This also applies to protein toast rolls with different best-before dates than the products affected by the Aldi recall.

The buns are not the first product where traces of ethylene oxide have been detected.

Pasta and a popular ice cream have also been recalled because the toxin was found*.
