The manufacturer “Kunua!” is recalling a product sold across the board by Aldi Süd.
A toxin was found in samples.
What consumers need to know now.
Bielefeld - There are various resentments against bread - because, according to the health
portal zentrum-der-gesundheit.de
, it can have "many health disadvantages".
Reason: "It contains gluten, isolated carbohydrates and not really many vital substances" and is also an "acidifier".
It's no wonder that alternative products - if not always rightly so - are booming.
But the supposedly healthier alternative from Aldi Süd is now being recalled by the manufacturer “Kunua!”.
Aldi Süd recall: Toast can lead to DNA damage
Ethylene oxide is the reason for the recall of the affected toast, which was often over the counter at Aldi Süd.
The pesticide and fungicide ethylene oxide is not approved at EU level, as is the manufacturer "Kunua!".
Nevertheless, the toxin, which can "change the genetic material and cause cancer", as the Hamburg consumer center reports, is found worryingly often in food - and various refrigerated goods are currently also affected.
The reason for this can be found in the above video from
Merkur.de
.
The substance, which can be used to sterilize medical test sticks, such as cotton swabs for corona tests, "if it is ensured that the limit value for ethylene oxide residues is not exceeded after use", can now also be found in these protein toast rolls from the "Goldears" brand.

As the manufacturer reports, the product was "sold in ALDI SÜD branches in parts of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Hesse." Other batch numbers, best-before dates or products from the manufacturer are not affected by the recall.

Recall: “Do not eat” protein bread from Aldi Süd – customers should do that now
According to the manufacturer, the affected protein product has been removed from sale in Aldi Süd branches.
Protein toast rolls that have already been purchased can “of course be returned there.
The purchase price will be refunded, even if the receipt is not presented,” continues “Kunua!”.
Consumption of the goods concerned should be avoided.
The North Rhine-Westphalia consumer advice center also advises "complaining with or [disposing of] foodstuffs that are affected by a public recall [...] in the sales outlets." (askl)
