(ANSA) - GENEVA, APRIL 01 - The number of Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war in their country has exceeded 4.1 million.
The United Nations announced it today, adding: "This tragedy must end".
The flow of people fleeing across the western borders to escape the Russian assault has stood at around 40,000 a day in the past week.
UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, said 4,102,876 Ukrainians had fled the country since the February 24 invasion, a figure up 43,771 from yesterday's numbers.
More than 3.4 million fled in March.
"Forced to go away to save your life.
Forced to leave their homes.
Forced to separate from family.
This tragedy must end, "said the UN agency. Women and children account for 90 percent of those who fled. Half of these are children.
Nearly six out of 10 Ukrainian refugees (2,384,814 so far) have entered Poland. Romania with a total of 623,627 Ukrainians, while 374,535 Ukrainians have entered Hungary at the moment, a total of 292,039 people have crossed the Ukrainian border with Slovakia. (ANSA).
