Will Smith has resigned from the Film Academy.
The actor who blew up Oscar night with his slap at comedian Chris Rock has gotten ahead of the powerful industry organization, which had launched a sanction process on Wednesday.
"I betrayed the trust of the Academy and deprived the nominees and winners of an opportunity to celebrate and be celebrated for their extraordinary work," Smith said in a statement sent to all specialized media.
Still, he says that he will accept any future consequences for his actions.
The Academy will report the punishment on April 18.
Smith's surprise announcement has been confirmed by the Academy.
David Rubin, the organization's president, has reported that he has accepted the resignation of one of Hollywood's biggest celebrities.
"We are moving forward with our disciplinary procedure," Rubin said in a statement.
The academy had given the actor 15 days to respond in writing to the investigation being carried out for the violation of the standards of conduct.
Smith claims that he has already answered the call of academics.
