Lithuanian director Mantas Kvedaravicius, 45, was killed trying to leave Mariupol, a port city in southeastern Ukraine besieged by Russian forces, the Ukrainian army announced on Sunday.

," the Ukrainian Defense Ministry news agency said on Twitter.
The death of the documentary filmmaker was also announced by the Russian director Vitali Manski, founder of the respected Moscow festival Artdocfest to which Mantas Kvedaravicius had already been invited.

His previous film, Mariupolis (2016), told the story of a beleaguered city with a strong will to live.
