Anyone who has been boosted can look forward to refreshed vaccination protection.

But there are already reports of a necessary fourth injection.

Read here who needs the second booster.

The corona vaccination "in principle offers good protection against serious illness and hospitalization due to COVID-19, this also applies to the omicron variant".

This is what it says on the website of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) as the Federal Institute for Infectious Diseases and Non-Communicable Diseases.

For this reason, vaccination is not only recommended for adults, but also for children over the age of 12

.

According to the Federal Center for Health Education, children between the ages of five and eleven should receive the vaccination if there is an increased risk of a severe course of the disease - for example due to an immune deficiency.

The booster vaccination after previous basic immunization renews the vaccination protection and thus protects against severe disease progression.

But is the second (after primary immunization with the Johnson & Johnson vaccine) or the third booster (after primary immunization with an mRNA vaccine) sufficient?

Or does the body need a second booster shot to be able to ward off the Sars-CoV-2 pathogen in the long term

?

The Standing Vaccination Committee (Stiko) makes a recommendation.

Second corona booster for risk groups

The 18th update of the STIKO vaccination recommendation from February 2022 states: "Furthermore, the STIKO recommends a

2nd booster vaccination with an mRNA vaccine

to people who are particularly at risk of health or who are exposed after the COVID-19 basic immunization has been completed and the 1st booster vaccination has been carried out " .

.

According to the medical journal, this group includes, for example, people over the age of 70, residents and those cared for in care facilities, as well as children and adults with immunodeficiency from the age of five and people working in medical facilities and care facilities.

Corona vaccination survey

Stiko also makes a recommendation for the second booster vaccination.

In risk groups, this should take place no earlier than three months after the first Moderna or Biontech booster vaccination.

Stiko goes on to say: "The second booster vaccination is also recommended for those working in medical and nursing facilities, but no earlier than

6 months after the first booster vaccination

".

According to the medical journal, the following applies to risk groups such as immunodeficiency and people who are in close contact with these groups: Stiko does not recommend any further booster vaccinations for those who have had a corona infection after the first booster vaccination.

For everyone else, such as healthy adults who do not work in the health sector, there is still no Stiko recommendation for a second booster

.
