Damascus-SANA

Damascus University has made progress on the Spanish website (Simago) for the classification of universities according to accurate scientific and academic indicators for the year 2022, where it ranked 705 according to the general classification, after it was in the 815th place last year, up by 110 points from the previous classification.

The progress made by the university, according to the statement of Dr. Marwan Al-Ra’i, a member of the special committee for the classification of Damascus University to SANA today, is due to several reasons, the most important of which is the increase in the number of external research published in the name of Damascus University, as well as the number of external citations for the research of Damascus University and the campaign (Your University Your Belonging) launched by the university at the end of last year 2021, which emphasizes researchers to mention the full affiliation to Damascus University when publishing and not to be limited only to the hospital or institution to which it belongs, in addition to the number of external research published in journals within the top 10 percent of international journals, as well as the number of published external research that achieved a percentage in terms of importance Search is more than 90 percent.

Dr. Al-Rahi pointed out that the number of external research published by Damascus University during the year 2020-2021 within the Scopus database, one of the most important and largest databases for the classification of scientific journals, amounted to more than 400 research in the previous year, an “unprecedented number for Damascus University.”

The (Simago) website, according to the sponsor, relies on the most difficult conditions for the classification of universities, research and educational centers and bodies. The classification is divided into four factors: the research classification, which is based on external research published within the Scopus database, especially those published in magazines among the top 10 percent of international journals. Where Damascus University has achieved unprecedented progress in this classification since its entry into the (Simago) classification, and Damascus University has advanced in this classification by 11 points from last year.

The second factor on which the site depends, according to the sponsor, is the classification of innovation, and it depends on the originality of the research published in the name of the university, in addition to the original research projects implemented at the university, as well as the inventions made at the university. Damascus University advanced in this classification by 116 points from last year, while the third factor depends ( Societal classification) on conferences, scientific community interaction, the university’s relationship in society, the university’s official website and its sub-sites and social networking pages, and Damascus University has regressed in this classification.

Al-Rahi pointed out that the fourth factor depends on the general classification, which includes all previous classifications, noting that the specialty of dentistry represented by the College of Dentistry and the Institute of Prosthodontics at the University of Damascus ranked 15th in the Arab countries in this classification and 29th in the Middle East.

He pointed out that Tishreen University entered this classification for the first time in its history, and the University of Aleppo fulfilled the entry requirement, but due to the difference in affiliation in external research published by the University of Aleppo, it did not enter the classification.

It is noteworthy that the number of research and educational centers and bodies classified in the aforementioned site this year reached 8,084, including only two Syrian universities, Damascus University and Tishreen University.
