The comparison portals Verivox and Check24 report drastically increased energy prices.

A possible energy embargo against Russia suggests further price increases.

Despite the mild winter,

heating costs

in German households

increased drastically

last winter , as reported by the comparison

portals Verivox

and

Check24

.

The main reason for this is the Ukraine war.

In the event of a possible supply stop of gas and oil from Russia, which is currently hotly debated, the portals are forecasting further price increases that would burden consumers in addition to the massively increased inflation rate, which is why more and more Germans now want to save energy.

Heating costs in Germany have risen despite the mild weather

Both Verivox and Check24 report strong price increases in heating costs in Germany.

According to Check24, consumers had to heat a little less in the current heating period than in the same period last year.

According to the German Weather Service, the reason for this was the warmest winter since weather recording began.

According to the comparison portals, the heating requirement was around

three

to

four percent lower

than between September 2020 and March 2021.

“In view of the war in Ukraine, there is currently no relief in sight for energy prices.

We therefore assume that heating costs for oil and gas will continue to rise.”

Do you heat with gas?

You pay so much more for heating compared to last year

According to an example from Check24, a model household that heats its terraced house with gas has so far paid 1,843 euros in the current heating period, compared to the previous year

only 1,005 euros were due.

According to the comparison

portal

, the gas costs are

83 percent higher than the heating costs of the past year

.

Verivox reports that gas suppliers are currently bearing significantly higher procurement costs than they were a year ago.

In addition , the import price

for natural gas

collected by the Federal Office of Economics and Export Control rose

by 239 percent

year - on - year .

Energy prices are rising: heating oil more than 80 percent more expensive compared to last year

The comparison portal Check24 made a price difference of 864 euros when

heating with oil

compared to the previous year.

Consumers with an oil heating system paid 1,601 euros from September 2021 to January 2022, i.e.

85 percent more

.

According to the Verivox portal, the sharp rise in heating oil prices is due to the development of crude oil prices on the world market.

Because

of the Ukraine war, the price of a barrel of crude oil is now more than $100, the highest it has been since 2007

.

According to the Verivox report, there is also the

CO2 price on fossil raw materials

, which puts an additional burden on owners of oil heating systems.

A possible stop in gas and oil deliveries due to the Ukraine war would have massive consequences for consumers

In order to end the war in Ukraine, Germany is currently discussing a possible delivery stop.

The German economy and private households have so far been heavily dependent on Russia for energy issues, which is why some Germans want to stick to nuclear power and coal energy.

“Energy costs have been rising steadily since 2020 and have literally exploded since the end of 2021.

The war in Ukraine and sanctions against Russia have pushed energy prices higher.

A possible delivery stop can exacerbate the situation.”

Steffen Suttner, Managing Director Energy at CHECK24

If the federal government were to choose an energy embargo as a measure against Russia, this would also affect consumers in Germany.

Energy costs are expected to

continue to rise

in the coming heating season.
