As of April 9, the Russian government will lift restrictions on flights to and from Russia from 52 countries, according to the Russian news agency TASS.

Restrictions were placed to slow down the spread of the corona and were lifted on the advice of the operational staff for the fight against the corona virus.

Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin has announced the move, which he says applies to "friendly countries".

"As of April 9, we are removing the restrictions imposed for the war on the Corona plague, which applied to scheduled and charter flights between Russia and a number of other countries. We are now resuming flights to 52 countries, including Argentina, India, South Africa and other friendly countries."

Mishustin added that previously it was possible to fly to 15 countries without restrictions, including some countries of the EAEU (Eurasian Economic Union), Qatar, Mexico and others.

The Eurasian Economic Union is an economic union of Russia and its 'immediate neighbors', formed after the dissolution of the Soviet Union to foster trade and development.

The Eurasian Union is often seen as a countermeasure to the influence of the European Union.

Key countries that are members of this union include Russia, Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

, India, Pakistan, South Africa, North Korea, Seychelles and Saudi Arabia.

While part of Russia's response to economic sanctions means closing its airspace to airlines from 36 countries, international flights are already arriving and departing from Russia on a daily basis.

A quick scan of the flight schedule today (Tuesday) at Moscow's two airports - Sharmatjevo (SVO) and Domodedovo (DME), shows airlines including Air Arabia, Etihad Airways and Emirates from the Emirates, Qatar Airways, Air Serbia, Corian Air, Air Chir Vienna, Sri Lanka Airlines and others operating international flights.

Air corridor from Russia to the Middle East

Data from Flightradar24.com, which tracks flights around the world, shows a popular route of flights from Dubai to Iran, Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan and via Russia to Moscow.

This is a simple air corridor from Russia to the Middle East, where flights can be linked to all those "friendly countries" that the Russian prime minister talks about so affectionately.

While Russia is currently the country facing the heaviest sanctions in the world, ahead of Iran, Syria and North Korea, it does not face sanctions from countries in Central and South America, Africa, the CIS and Asia, other than Japan.

With all those areas open to Russia, its airlines have a large and safe playing field and they can withstand the global sanctions that prevent them from refueling planes or repairing and maintaining them.
