According to a Verivox analysis, heat pumps are becoming more and more attractive to consumers due to the rise in energy prices.

Heating costs, including gas prices in Germany, have risen sharply* - one of several financial consequences of the Ukraine war, which is why many consumers are considering switching away from gas.

According to an

analysis by the comparison portal Verivox

, as the company reports,

heat pumps are also becoming more and more attractive

for consumers.

High heating costs: How does a heat pump work and what are its disadvantages?

Basically, a heat pump uses

energy from the environment, which it converts into heat

.

The heat contained in the water, in the ground or in the air is fed to the refrigerant with the help of an evaporator.

According to the manufacturer Bosch, the major disadvantage of heat pumps is the comparatively

high

acquisition

costs

.

In contrast to conventional gas or oil heating systems, the cost of purchasing a heat pump is around 10,000 to 25,000 euros, according to the manufacturer, depending on the type of heat pump used and the development effort.

Comparison of heating costs: Heating with a heat pump is up to 39 cheaper than with natural gas

According to the analysis of the comparison portal Verivox,

heating with a heat pump is currently much cheaper than with natural gas

.

According to this, the costs for a heat pump are on average

39 percent

below the price for heating with gas, at least if it is an efficient heating system with a heat pump.

But even if the heat pump is not very efficient, according to the company's statement, the costs are still 11 percent lower than gas.

In any case, many consumers in Germany want to save energy because of the increased prices.

"Due to the high wholesale prices, the electricity prices for heat pumps will in all likelihood continue to rise in the coming months - but this also applies to gas prices."

Thorsten Storck, energy expert at Verivox

Heat pump: According to Verivox, electricity is significantly cheaper

According to Verivox, if you have an efficient heat pump with an annual performance factor of 4, you need

a total of 5,000 kWh of heat pump electricity to provide 20,000 kWh of heat

.

The average price for this in Germany in March 2022 was 1,573 euros.

That makes a price difference of about 39 percent compared to gas.

“Heat pumps are already the most popular heating technology in new builds.

Switching to a heat pump can also be worthwhile in existing buildings.

However, this depends heavily on the structural conditions.

Anyone interested should clarify which type of heat pump is possible in each case and how efficient the future heating system can be with the help of qualified energy advice on site.”

If your heating system is less efficient, for example with an annual performance factor of 2.7, you pay an average of 2,310 euros, which is still 11 percent below the cost of gas, according to the report.

Purchasing a heat pump can be worthwhile

If the current price difference between heat pump and gas remains the same or even increases, switching to Verivox appears to become increasingly attractive for consumers.

“Assuming a price of around 20,000 euros including state subsidies, switching to an efficient heat pump could pay for itself within 10 years at current prices.

However, the price ranges for the heating systems and the necessary conversion work are large and depend on the individual situation.”

Thorsten Storck, energy expert at Verivox.

It is best to find out from experts whether a heat pump makes financial sense for you.
