Germany is packing its bags: During the Easter holidays, many are planning their holidays on the Baltic and North Seas.

But a lot is already fully booked.

That's the situation on the ground.

Borkum/Amrum/Rostock/Lübeck – The tough Corona* winter is quickly coming to an end and the Easter holidays are just around the corner in many federal states.

Places to go on vacation on the North Sea and Baltic Sea in Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania are preparing for the onslaught of the upcoming Easter holidays and vacations.

The booking situation between the North Sea and Baltic Sea, Harz and Heide is good to very good this year, according to a survey of various holiday destinations by the German Prese Agency.

April 4th is the first day of vacation in Lower Saxony, Schleswig-Holstein and Bremen.

The other federal states will follow from April 9th and 14th respectively.

In Hamburg, the holidays are already coming to an end on March 20th.

According to the Tourismus-Agentur Schleswig-Holstein GmbH (TA.SH), the booking situation for the Easter holidays in the holiday resorts in the northernmost federal state is good to very good.

"But there is still free capacity, especially in the inland regions between the coasts," said TA.SH Managing Director Bettina Bunge of the German Press Agency.

Presumably because of the changeable Corona situation, the guests are a little more hesitant in their booking behavior.

"The trends towards short-term bookings and longer stays continue."

Holidays on the Baltic Sea and North Sea during the Easter holidays: popular in Schleswig-Holstein, Lower Saxony and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

According to a spokeswoman for Föhr Touristik, the occupancy rate on the island of Föhr is currently only almost 50 percent.

"Since the booking behavior of many guests has changed due to the pandemic towards short-term bookings, we assume that demand will continue to increase in the coming weeks." On Amrum, the occupancy rate during the Easter holidays is almost at the level of previous years , but capacities are still free.

Sylt is also popular.

In Grömitz on the Baltic Sea, about 80 percent of the accommodations that are in the contingent of the tourism service are fully booked over Easter.

The Bay of Lübeck recorded a slight increase in bookings for Easter compared to the pre-Corona year 2019. In Heiligenhafen it is foreseeable that many guests will come to the village at Easter.

However, there is still capacity here.

There are still some free capacities on Fehmarn for Easter, but according to the information, the selection is becoming significantly smaller from day to day.

As a reminder: Last May, Baltic Sea vacations in the Bay of Lübeck were very popular: there were crowds of people on the beaches.

In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the corona pandemic and the consequences of the war in Ukraine are clouding the expectations of tourism professionals for Easter business.

But at the same time it is also clear that people want to travel, said Tobias Woitendorf, Managing Director of the State Tourism Association.

At the moment, many quarters are already well booked and a good occupancy rate can ultimately be expected.

"It is unclear how the so-called hotspot regulations will be implemented in the northeast," said Woitendorf.

The state currently has the highest seven-day incidence nationwide with a value of around 2500.

Finally going on vacation again during the Easter holidays: "We feel that people want to get out"

"Most of the houses are well booked in advance," confirmed the President of Dehoga Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Lars Schwarz.

However, some of them could not yet increase capacity as desired because there was still a lack of workers.

"When in doubt, you have to be satisfied with a lower capacity utilization." But there will be a clear and positive sign for a new start.

On the Lower Saxony North Sea coast, Die Nordsee GmbH, a tourism association for several coastal bathing resorts, is already reporting high demand.

“We are pleased about a consistently positive booking situation over Easter.

We are already registering an occupancy rate of between 80 and 90 percent, and the trend is rising,” said Managing Director Sonja Janßen.

If you want to book at short notice, you should contact the local accommodation agencies.

The booking situation is very good, said Wiebke Leverenz from Ostfriesland Tourismus GmbH in Leer.

"We sense that people want to get out and enjoy the fresh air." Many bookings were made long in advance.

This is how you can book at short notice*.

On the East Frisian Islands, where the season starts at Easter, the booking situation still varies from island to island.

"Some are already very well booked, while others report reluctance to book due to Corona," said Marc Klinke, Marketing Director of Ostfriesische Insel GmbH.

The question that also arises here is: will ferries become more expensive just in time for Easter?
