A wrong-way driver died in an accident on the A1 in North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday night.
The 40-year-old was on the highway near Blankenheim in the Euskirchen district traveling in the opposite direction to the south and collided with a truck, the police said in the morning.
After the collision with the truck, the car rolled over and crashed into the central barrier.
The driver was thrown from the car and died instantly, officials said.
The 53-year-old truck driver was slightly injured.
According to the police, the force of the impact threw the engine block of the car into the oncoming lane, which is why the lane was blocked in both directions.
The closure is expected to last until mid-morning.
The securing of evidence "can only be completed in daylight," said a police spokesman for the "Kölner Stadt-Anzeiger".
A diversion had been set up.
