A mysterious creature on the beach (@tanalex)

Alex Tan, a resident of Queensland, Australia, was left confused when he found the body of a 4-legged creature with a long rat-like tail washed ashore - and had no idea what it was.

The creature found on Sunshine Beach in Australia has lost almost all of the flesh on its head and has revealed a rather long and disturbing-looking skull.

The guy shared a video of the unusual discovery on his Instagram, alongside the caption: "I came across something strange. It looks like one of those things people claim to have seen when they encountered aliens."

He described the chilling finding as something that looked like a "hairless opossum", but added that it was "different from anything he had seen in his life".

He then stated that in his opinion it was an "extraterrestrial" fortification, the Daily Star reported.

In the video he focused the camera on the swollen body of the creature around which flies were added and added: "How weird is that ?!".

More strange creatures

  • A rare record of an alien fish with a transparent head and green eyes rolling backwards

  • Stressful documentation of "Bigfoot" left even the experts stunned: "It may be the real thing"

  • Are you entitled to a disabled card and are unable to receive it?

    This is the solution

Tan asked his followers what they thought this animal should be and added that he was "really excited to find out what it is."

Some followers guessed it was a kangaroo or wolby drowning in the sea.

This is not unreasonable: the bodies of land animals that have been in the sea for a long time can often get a strange appearance that makes identification difficult.

The combination of tides, salt water and scavengers can distort the bodies beyond recognition.

He turned to experts who would try to find out what it was

Has the answer been found?

In addition, it is possible that these are "completely normal" marine creatures from the depths of the ocean that the average person is unlikely to recognize.

An unusual number of "monsters" from the depths of the sea were washed ashore last year off the coast of Southern California - even though they are completely normal marine creatures.

The Pacific football fish, for example, was discovered 100 years ago and since then only 31 of its sightings have been recorded, with 3 of them being bodies washed ashore by the California coastline in 2021.

After several days of research the mystery may be close to being solved, after the scientific website livescience published that marine experts approached it with answers.

Russell Bicknell, a marine biologist at the University of New England in Australia, told Live Science that he thought it was indeed a kangaroo or wallaby.

Whatever it is, he said, it is "very soaked in water", apparently after being washed into the sea during the recent floods in the area.

"I would say it's a common tail-brush possum, Trichosurus vulpecula, that has lost all its fur," Sandy Inglesby, director of the Australian Museum's Mammal Collection, told Live Science in an email.

She added that the skull certainly matches that of the possum, as well as the proportions of the limbs and tail to the body.
